Lunch at Halga place after church

We had our lunch after church service at Halgar house with Donald and his children.
Though the church that JoAnn is pastoring, is not large, but I can see that this is a growing church with member desiring to grow in maturity. We had a very delicious curry chicken meal after church service. Really taste like Singapore style. Yum Yum.

Visiting the Western Part of Guatemala with Halga

Town in Quzeltanenago

Together with halgar at the 1st Maya ruins town in Ixela

Today, i travel with Halgar, a local lawyer to the western part of Gautemala, It was a long drive upand whatmore is that Halgar don't speck english and I don't speak spanish, so we actually struggle as we communicate with each other. It was fun though as we find our own sign language and expressions of words in communication. This is the 2nd larger city in Guatemala, and I got to see alot more Mayan people, and the local market. As we travel up, the scenery was just spectacular and witnessed some of the road destroyed by the recent hurricane, which had caused thousand to died. Many of the folks here are very poor and bascially the soucre of income here is from agricultural. i love drive through all the small town and experience the different lifestyle here. This is wonderful.

Pacaya Volcanoe Hike

View from below at village of the Pacaya

This is just one of the amazing experience i had in my traveling thus far. To be able to see the volcanoe and feel the flame, smell the suplur, enjoy the spectaluar view from the top and doing the tedious hike up, was just awesome. I wasn't even expecting this as I do not even know what I had book for when I sign up for the trip. I thought I will just go walk around the volcanoe and not the hiking, Thus I was not prepared in gear and stuffs, but thank God I mangaged to do the hike up the windy and sandy slope. Tedious but fun and awesome experience I had.

Happy birthday to you, Joy

Having our Chinese dinner in our neighbour house
Me, Lydia, Christy and he daughter and my birthday cake ;)

Wow! What a feeling and experience to spend my 37th birthday yesterday, 14th November, here in Guatemala. JoAnn was very sweet, she bought me a bouquet of peach roses, and in the afternoon, we have a mini celebration at Christy her friend house, Lydia bake me a cake and Christy asked me to choose my birthday gift from her collection of costumes jewellery; we had a wonderful time of fellowship and sharings. Christy is such a wonderful host who have no airs about in her, conming from a very influential background, her husband is a president of a bank.
Later in the evening, we went to our neighbour house to have dinner together, JoAnn cooked her favourite Black Chicken sauce and mixed vegetables, it was yummy and again, I recieved a birthday present from them. Latino are such warmth and loving people to be around with. Though I do not know them well, but they are just so kind to extend their love and friendship to you. We chatted from interesting places in Guatemala to polictical issue, the host that we were with for dinner, had almost become the president of Guatemala, when his party want to have him runs for presidency, but because of his humility and being a rightoeus man, knowledge of what the job entitled him to do. He rejected the offer and prefer to live as civilians. We chatted util almost 12 midnight. Wow! so much to talk about in life.
Hmm! how do I feel getting ´wiser´as each year pass. I don´t know, does age really matters, maybe not, it is what you feel inside you and the mentality you have. I don´t feel old although reality states I am, but what I feel is that as along as I am happy and is that I continue to have dreams and goals and reaching out to people, making a difference. That´s what will matter. Well, just a penny of my thoughts.
Indeed, I had quite an experience and a good time spending my birthday here in Guatemala. Thank you, those who send me good wishes. I really appreciate it. May our good Lord bless and keep you all.

Local meat seller, they sold their meat behind the counter.

Heres are some picture of the friends who live in Mancos - a small village up north of Guatemala in Peten. I had my fun time of trying to communicate spanish and playing Uno card game with the boys.

Visiting Peten Tikal - the Mayan ruins

Tikal is one of the toursit attraction in Guatemala, and I was glad that I got a local travel companion to go and visit with me. His name is Elires, I hope I spelled his name rightly. He is the son of JoAnn´s friend Cludial, a very good and intelligent boy indeed. They live in Mancos, one of the local village house, and so JoAnn and myself actually stayed with them for about a week, in the village. It was quite a refreshing expreience for me. Having to take bath by 10am, otherwise there will not be any supply of water. To cook with limited untensil, having to spray insect repellent all over me. Nothing much to do expect to read and plan for the Youth Life Workshop I will be having for about 100 young people in Guatemala. Am looking forward and excited about this new venture.

Coming back to Tikal, this is a place that has a history of being around since 300 AD, during it´s peak occupancy it had about 1000 civilisation. Indeed, when we were there, I was amazed by the structure of the architect and the location of each site or temple, which has it´s significent position. We spent a good day of walking and exploring the ruins and I must say Elires is a good companion to be around with.

Arriving in Guatemala

Hola, Como esta… Arriving Guatemala at about 9pm local time on 27th October 2005, I was very excited and happy to meet up with JoAnn again. It has been almost 2 years since we last meet each other in Singapore. She seems to have lost quite a bit of weight.
I was warmly greeted by her good friend in Guatemala Claudet and her pretty daughter Alejandra. Claudet was cooked a welcome Guatemalan Beef stew for my arrival. I must admit that me being a fussy eater, it really tasted delicious.

Since my arrival to Guatemala, almost everyday there are activities lineup - visiting Antigua, and the victim form the recent hurricane storm, and meeting different friends and contacts of JoAnn - attending gatherings and party.

We visited Antigua with 500 years old history, this is a former busy city of Guatemala but now it had became a one of the tourist attraction to visit and learn Spanish language, which is also one of my intention to come to Guatemala.
Somehow, maybe I was so used to space given me for 3 months when I was in USA. When we took the public bus to Antigua, I was kinda agitated or uncomfortable as witness by JoAnn. I assured her to give me sometime to adjust myself to the culture and lifestyle here. I must say that the Latino people are very warm and friendly. Their greeting is to give you a pat on your cheek and a light hug, regardless of genders.

We were invited to attend Rosario’s son 18 years old graduation party. Kind of a new experience for me, so different from the party we used to attend – whereby there are a buffet of food line up to feast on. Here the emphasis is on chatting and dancing with family and friends. Anyway, many of the guest did not turn up or came very late. And I was very hungry, I actually thought that I going to have a feast, so I only had brunch in the afternoon. But the dinner will only be served later at 9pm. Oh no! What a culture shock! Anyway, I had some fun later part of the night when I began to do some latino dance with the host.

Sunday church, JoAnn preached in Spanish and tried to interpret for me in English. It was a good message on Faith. Met Donald, a very passionate and powerful worship leader. He is one of JoAnn most faithful member and leader in Church. Infact, the church consist mainly on him and his family. Praise God, this Sunday we had some additional members 1 family and a member came, so the total attendance was 10. One of my purpose of coming to Guatemala and spending at least 2 full months here is to support JoAnn and her ministry here. And praise God she agrees to my suggestion to organize a 3 days Youth Life workshop. Basically, I will be involving in the whole process of creating the program and the running of it. Please pray for us in this new venture we will be undertaking. Our vision for this workshop is To see the young people in Guatemala being set free from their inner fears, self esteem being build up and to reach for their dreams. Will share more with you as it progress.

After service, we took a cab to Claudia´s house JoAnn friend in ministry, she is a very beautiful and faithful follower of Christ, to stay overnight. Her father pastor Avelino, is very involved with the poor ministry and this time, they will be making a trip up to the recent storm affected area to give out food and clothings supplies to the poor and needy.
And we will be going to help with the distribution and prayer support.
Actually, Pastor Avelino used to run a Feeding Children program for the poor family in his church vicinity, but because of the lack of funds. The program had been stopped for the last couples of months. So here I plead for any of you who is wanting to make contributions and make a difference in the life of these children, do let me know as I would like to see this work continues.

There are just so many needs in the world out there in the 3rd world nation. We are so blessed to be living in the 1st world nation like Singapore, blessed as a nation. Let’s remember that there are poor and needy people out there for us to lend a helping hand to.

On 1st November, 2005, was All Saints Day, we were invited to Claudet´s well to do influencer boyfriend Ricardo’s very Spanish looking villa for lunch at Antiqua, we had a special dish call Fiambre – this is a cold dish filled with varieties of meats and vegetables. It was good dish to try for the first time. Later we drove down to get the famous Pumpkin pie for desert and super. Somehow, although, I do not speak Spanish and they speak very little English, there were just a lot to talk about. They shared with me about their vision to set up a Organ Transplant vision for the poor people in Guatemala. This is a project I really want to see them succeed. I will share more details in my next blog.
